As you approach Kas, an almost fjord like panorama can be seen. Sheltered from the open seas is the Cukurbag peninsula, and at the tip of this lies the tiny Greek island of Kastellorizio or Meis. This is the most eastern island of Greece and in days gone by the villagers from the island used to row their boats across to Kas for the weekly fruit and vegetable market, customs and passport control unheard of!
Kas is more of a working town than Kalkan but has retained its character and ambience, well known for its sea front cafes and ambling cobbled back streets. Antiques, carpets handicrafts herbs and spices can be found in Uzun Carsisi where latticed wooden balconies adorned with vivid bougainville hang over the cobbled lanes.
At the top of the street, in fact right in the centre of the street, a 3000 year old imposing sarcophagus is decorated with lions heads.
Kas has an abundance of very good restaurants some located around the harbour area, others tucked away in the winding back streets, you will be spoiled for choice.
The sheer beauty of the area cannot be overlooked with the Akdag mountain range rising 3000 metres above the town, making a very impressive backdrop. Kas holds many treasures but the sheer convenience of the peninsula where most of the accommodations can be found, with crystal clear waters and umpteen bays and coves to swim in. By night visitors head into town for entertainment shopping and restaurants making the perfect combination.
